The style is easy to learn, and covers the instruction itself, basic right and left-hand positions, simple chords, and fundamental clawhammer techniques; the brush, the 'bumm-titty' strum, pull-offs, and slides. For the advanced player, there is instruction on more complicated picking, double thumbing, quick slides, fretted pull-offs, harmonics, improvisation, and more. The book includes more than 40 fun-to-play banjo tunes.

Keith style - The Keith style of playing the 5-string banjo emphasizes the melody of the song. Also known as the "Melodic" or "Chromatic style", it was first developed and popularized independently by Bobby Thompson and Bill Keith in the early 1960s.

Clawhammer - Clawhammer and frailing describe a class of fingerpicking techniques used by banjo and, rarely, guitar players. Although both terms are widely used by players, the difference between the two is not clear and there have been many debates over the precise meanings of the terms, so for the sake of consistency this article will treat them as equivalent and prefer the more popular term "clawhammer".

Scruggs style - Scruggs style is a fingerpicking method of playing the banjo, also known as the three-finger technique or roll. Named for Earl Scruggs, its first major proponent, it typically requires picks on the thumb and first two fingers of the right hand, with the ring and little fingers braced solidly on the head of the instrument.

Crosspicking - Crosspicking is a technique for playing various stringed instruments using a plectrum or flatpick in a rolling, syncopated style across three strings. This style is probably best known as one element of the flatpicking style in bluegrass music and closely resembles some banjo styles.
